We are Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, a people called by the grace of God to faith in Jesus Christ, by the Holy Spirit through the Gospel. That Word of God that gives us new life with Him is at the center of our gathering, our worshipping and our serving. The Word that gathers us also sends us out into the world of people around us to proclaim Jesus Christ, Redeemer and Lord. In order to be more completely involved in fulfilling our Lords commission to Go and make disciples Mt. Calvary is an active member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
What We Believe
How To Find Us
We are located on Hwy. 92 just under 2 miles east of the Hwy 65/69 intersection and directly across from Pickard Park.
The City of Indianola is only 12 miles south of Des Moines. Founded in 1845, Indianola today is an exciting blend of growing neighborhoods, great schools and nationally known institutions. The Des Moines Metro Opera and the National Balloon Classic call Indianola home. Simpson College, a four-year liberal arts institution that has taught students such as George Washington Carver, and the National Balloon Museum are also in town. You may get to town by following the Highway 65 bypass south from I-80, or by exiting on Hwy 92 east from I-35. Mt. Calvary is proud to serve the people of Indianola and the surrounding communities.
We offer two different services with two different formats every Sunday:
Children are welcomed and cherished at Mt. Calvary. Families may sit wherever they feel comfortable. That may mean certain parts of the worship service feature the background noise of shuffling feet and tiny voices, but we celebrate them as models of faith to which our Savior pointed us.
Coffee, Rolls, and Conversation are available immediately following worship on most Sundays in the fellowship area. All are invited for something to drink and to visit with one another. This is a great time to meet some of our family here at Mt. Calvary.

There will be a light lunch served at 11:30 am followed by cake and ice cream. There is information on the bulletin board to RSVP to her son, Russ. They ask that you do not bring gifts but they are looking for any photos you may have of Nancy that you would be willing to share, (see the bulletin board for all of the details).
ADULT BIBLE CLASS: Have you ever wanted to journey to the Holy Land? Well, here is your chance to do so virtually! Join our DCE Intern, Casey Roberts, in the Bible Study Series "That the World May Know", where we will take video tours of the ancient land of Israel. The goal of this study is to gain a better understanding of the Scriptures by understanding the environment they took place in. The study will take place during the Sunday School hour starting at 9:15 am today. Hope to see you there!
PICNIC: St. Paul Lutheran Church in Rural Lacona/Germantown will hold their Annual Picnic on Sunday, August 2nd, at 3:00 pm. There will be homemade ice cream and pie, fried chicken, beef burgers and more with kids games and adult tournaments and Al Butler and family performing from 5:00-7:00 pm. They invite us to join them!
MT. CALVARY YOUTH: There has been some confusion as we adjust to the new role that Casey is bringing to Mt. Calvary. Jen Ohnemus is still the Chairperson of the Youth Board, Amanda Cawthorn remains the adult counselor working directly with the high school youth and Casey, our DCE Intern, is working with both as a team. We are blessed to have each of them and the gifts that God gives to us through them. They will continue to work together as a team to share God's love, not replacing each other, but supporting one another and you.
NEW WORKROOM: The Workroom has now been moved to the second room on the Left hand side of the Sunday School hallway. The old Workroom is now Casey Roberts office.
REMEMBER: Remember to bring your Indianola Hy Vee Receipts to church. We need to get to $150,000.00 by December so, keep them coming! The garden center is open now and those count also; any Hy Vee Indianola receipts can be turned in but they must be from the Indianola store.
Remember to bring your ink cartridges to church. These are turned in to Staples and the church gets $2.00 for each one up to 40 cartridges a month.
Remember to turn in your old cell phones. I mail these to Cell Phones for Soldiers. Soldiers and veterans receive phone cards so they can call family and friends.
Thank you - Joan Van Diepen
HIGH CHAIR AND BOOSTER CHAIRS: A high chair and 2 booster chairs are available for your use in the fellowship hall and will be stored in the Nursery Room, (the first classroom on the Left hand side of the education wing). If you use them in the fellowship hall, please return them to the Nursery Room.
HELPING HAND NEEDS: Since we were not able to have a Helping Hand article in the June Shadow, here are some of the items that they could use: instant and/or cooked puddings, jell-o, soda crackers, apple sauce, 2# packages of sugar, tomato and chicken noodle soups and paper towels. Please keep bringing items in to help people in Indianola and surrounding communities! Thank you!
MT. CALVARY IS NOW ACCEPTING CREDIT CARDS OR DEBIT CARDS: Offerings can now be made using your credit card or debit card. The card reader is in the fellowship hall and you may follow the directions to use it.
CHURCH TEXT LIST: If you would like to receive text messages from church regarding cancellations of worship or other events or reminders, please text "ezyud82790" to "313131" or give your mobile phone number to the office and we can add your number to the text list. You will receive a reply adding you to our text list. All messages from church will be identified as from "313131", so, you may want to enter that number into your list of contacts.
PRESCHOOL: Calvary's Kids Preschool is now accepting registrations for the 2015-2016 school year. We offer a four morning-per-week class for 4 and 5 year olds and a three afternoon-per-week class for 3, 4 and 5 year olds. Brochures about the preschool and registration forms can be found on the church information table in the entry. We will be hosting a Spring Registration Open house on Monday, March 9th, 5:30-7:00 pm in the preschool classroom. Families are welcome to bring their prospective preschool students to see our exciting preschool environment and visit with the teachers. Please feel free to contact Linda Hayden, (961-4521 or at firstname.lastname@example.org), for more information.

They will be looking for participants for the choir, (80 voices), a full orchestra ranging from ages 13 and older, (40 members), and a children's choir, ages 5-12 years of age. LIFE THOUGHTS: Jesus is the Bread of Life that came down from heaven to give us eternal life, (John 6:
33-35). Therefore, we can be assured that He will not forsake us in this life and will provide our daily bread. We need not turn to the "deceitful schemes" of this world, which so often involve death, to rescue us from our problems, (Ephesians 4:14). We partake of and trust in the Bread of Life. Prayer: Bread of Life, having given me eternal life, enable me to live this life focused on You and Your will. Amen.
LUTHERANS FOR LIFE: “Parental love is vital. In homes where children are not adored by at least one parent (or a parent-figure), they wither like a plant without food.” The New Dare to Discipline – A “Life Quote” from Lutherans For Life - www.lutheransforlife.org
STEWARDSHIP CORNER: In his book, The Power of Pure Stewardship, Rev. Carl Berner provides the following illustration to explain stewardship. "Stewardship means that life is like a great ship loaded with cargo to be delivered to many people in many places. God is the owner of the ship and its cargo, but He has made me the captain." All that God has placed aboard the ship of life - time, talents, treasures, ability to think and to work - all is God's cargo to be delivered according to His will. May God grant us wisdom and strength to be His faithful captains of our ships.
BUILDING HEALTHY FAMILIES:“I think I can, I think I can, I think I can….” Remember this repeating line from the children’s book The Little Engine That Could? Yesterday and still today the story lines and themes of popular books, songs, movies or TV shows give us ample opportunity to begin a conversation with a young person that will influence their faith development. “I think I can…” provides a great opening for sharing how I can’t, but “All things are possible with God.” One episode of “The Bachelorette” provides plenty of opportunity to talk with your teen about how to choose a spouse and what’s really important in a marriage partner. Keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities to share faith and God’s good design for life and marriage with those in your family this week! Lutheran Family Service
